About Me

Piers was born in Lincolnshire… He has a degree in Human Sciences from Oxford University… He has taught a thousand people how to play the Jew’s Harp…

Here is the biog from Factual Management’s website:

“Piers Gibbon is a presenter, writer, conference host and prolific voiceover artist. He has a degree in Human Sciences from Oxford. The many -ologies involved in that degree are reflected in his work.
He has a book called Tribes coming out at the end of 2010, published by Octopus. He recently presented the critically acclaimed Headshrinkers of the Amazon (Diverse Productions for Channel 5), and is currently in production for his next National Geographic adventure, in Papua New Guinea (bullseye tv) – both films are directed by Osca Humphreys.

A lot of his TV work comes under the headings: poisons and drugs and tribes and belief and weird food. He presented a six part series on weird food for ITV (imago productions) – the star attractions were stags testicles and sealice infested moray eels.
He has also been Technology Toys correspondent for NowTV and maintains an unhealthy interest in gadgets and computers.
His first presenting work was Jungle Trip for Channel Four (Keo Films 2000) which followed him into Peru for an extensive scarification involving the native hallucinogenic drink ayahuasca and having frog poison burned into his skin.
It also involved ingesting a live millipede as one of the few westerners to be inducted into the shamanic tradition of “yachay” (swallowing the magical phlegm of a maestro).

His own magical phlegm is much in evidence in his voiceover work – 300 hundred hours of documentaries for the BBC, NatGeo, Discovery, Channel 4, Channel 5 as well as commercials for BMW and The Royal Bank of Scotland.
Other voiceover highlights include work for Oxfam, the Royal Television Society award winning Risky Business series with Favourite Films and David Attenborough’s Birds of Paradise for the BBC .
He now has his own Voiceover ISDN studio in London Bridge from which he also does live radio interviews. He was Sony Nominated for his radio documentary series “The Good Drugs Guide”.

He loves being alive in front of a live audience and has a longstanding addiction issue with making people laugh – he contributed to many comedy events including the book The Internet:Now in Handy Book Form with David McCandless.
He is a Jews Harp player and has appeared on a worldwide top ten hit.
He also trains people in public speaking and hosts awards ceremonies and conferences for arts and medical organisations as well as BMW, Virgin, AET, AXA, The Financial Times, Lawson Dodd PR and many others..

Headshrinkers of the Amazon FAQs:

Jungle Trip

Q: >What happened on the thirty days in the jungle alone?
Q: What happened to you when you’d finished?
Q: What was that yucky thing you swallowed?
A: It is called yachay. It is a form of magical phlegm. In this case it was a live millipede that Don Demetrio had presumably swallowed earlier and then vomited up during the ceremony.

Here are some of the replies Piers has sent to people who have emailed detailing their problems and asking for contact with Don Demetrio of Yumbatos..and the other shamans he have worked with:

I got a lot of emails from people who feel stuck, who feel in need of a whack on the head or who feel let down by western medicine – and many feel that ayahuasca will be the right thing for them. That doesn’t mean that ayahuasca is the right thing for them though!

Annoyingly the answer (if there is one) probably lies in a combination of long sessions of talking therapy with a qualified psychotherapist, finding a good and understanding doctor….and then maybe one day again considering some of the more non mainstream therapies like ayahuasca.

That’s not because I am somehow special and can handle it – far from it. But life is a long game and there’s plenty of time.

When you really feel ready then best of luck. Unfortunately Don Demetrio is elusive. The phone number I had for his village of Yumbatos no longer works apparently.

Personally I would start with these people in Iquitos, Peru.

and work with them to right the right curandero to work with. And take care about the legalities and ethics of ayahuasca use.
